PREPARING SHEEP-DIP
ROAD IMPROVEMENTS

The monthly meeting of the Uawa County Council was held in Tolaga Bay on Monday, the chairman, Cr. J. McNeil, presiding. The Transport Department, Wellington, wrote giving full details of the alterations under the regulations for controlling pedestrian crossings ana safety zones. —The matter was left in abeyance to enable further inquiries to be-made. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote stating that arrangements were being- made for the distributions ol supplies of the drug used on dogs in the hydatid campaign and that the registration period for 1940 had been extended to February 1. The East Coast Provincial Centennial Council advised that the centennial branch of the Internal Affairs Department required a list of persons, Maori and European, of 15 years or longer residence in New Zealand to provide them with ribbons. —The county clerk was instructed to deal with the matter. The Social Security Department advised that all No. 13 scheme men were to be transferred to No. 4B scheme. Willow-Clearing Scheme The Public "Works Department, Gisborne, forwarded a copy of a plan and report on willow clearing of the Hikuwai Stream—lt was decided to make an examination of the proposals and to make a decision at the next meeting of the council. The Tairawhiti District Maori Land Board wrote approving of the subdivision of rates on the Mangatuna A2B block. Amalgamated Transport, Limited, wrote asking for a refund of heavy traffic license fees—On the motion oi Cr. Weeks, seconded by the chairman, the refund was granted. The Automobile Association wrote asking to be advised of any matters connected with sign posting.—The clerk was instructed to write calling attention to the Arakihi road signpost. Tenders were opened for metalling the approaches to Manga'neia road bridge, and the chairman’s action in accepting Mr. R. J. Prebble’s tender was endorsed.
A warning was issued to all carriers and others concerned that all rubbish must be dumped at the place appointed. It was decided to have the sheep dip cleaned out and ready for service as soon as possible. , Engineer’s Report
The county engineer, Mr. C. Percy, reported as follows: "Arakihi Riding.—An engineering survey is in hand to improve various bad -corners and grades on the Arakihi road. The KiOre road is verybare in certain Darts; a top-dressing of limestone chips would he most advantageous. Estimates and proposals for opening up Black’s road have been submitted to the Public Works Department. “In the Tauwhareparae riding the continuous wet weather has somewhat delayed the regrading of the various roads, but the work already carried out has effected a great improvement. The engineering survey for improvements on the Tauwhareparae road is almost completed. A mile of work from Spencer’s road has been laid. Estimates also have been prepared for metalling about 60 chains of this road from the present metal end at Tuarua. The contracts for metalling and formation work on the Huanui road are both completed. A temporary road has been opened up to give access to Mr. Bertram’s, Waihapua road. Plans and estimates fbr permanent work of this road are being submitted to the Public Works Department.
“Mangahiia Riding.—Plans and estimates have been prepared for the proposed deviation at the “island” or. the Gorge road. Tenders are being considered for metalling the approaches to the Mangaheia bridge, Mangatokerau road; the necessary authority is now to hand. “Hauiti Riding.—Top-dressing on the Waihau road will be put in hand at an early date.”
