DESTRUCTION OF DEER
PLANS FOR CAMPAIGN STATEMENT BY MINISTER EXTENSIVE ATTACK Plans of this year’s official campaign for the destruction of deer have been completed by the fields division of the Department of Internal Affairs and are to be put into operation within a few days. The Minister of Internal. Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, stated last week that an extensive area of deer-infested country of the North and South Islands would be simultaneously attacked this season. The number of men engaged at the outset would be 120, of whom 30 would be operating in the North Island and 90 in the South and Stewart Islands.
In the north the areas of operations are Kaingaroa, Urewera, Lake Waikaremoana and the Kaimanawa, Kaweka and Ahimanawa Ranges. In addition, a party will start from the vicinity of Tarawera and operate on a fairly small area of country to the north-east of the Taupo-Napier road, which is bounded by the Waipunga, ; Mohaka and Waiau Rivers, thus effecting a junction with the Waikaremoana operations. A permanent organisation has also been set up to operate the Tararua Range area. Operations in the . South Island are to include the MarlboroughNelson region, the Canterbury region and Southland. The Minister said that in view of the increased value of deer-skins special efforts would be made to increase the proportion of skins recovered. It was anticipated that a substantial contribution toward the cost of the season’s campaign and to overseas funds would be derived from that source.
