MARKED PROGRESS

TE KARAKA HIGH SCHOOL COURSES WIDENED SPLENDID SUPPORT The annual breaking-up function of the Te Karaka District High School took place last Friday, when sports trophies and certificates were presented to the pupils. A review of the year’s work showed marked progress in the development of the school. Seven out of nine candidates presented in December, 1938, for matriculation, passed, while two higher leaving certificates were granted, and eight candidates out of 10 were successful in the school certificate examination. Two candidates were accepted for the Teachers’ Training College, while eight candidates out of 12 were successful in the public service entrance examination. Three out of four candidates were successful in the Chamber of Commerce examinations. The staffing of the school had improved considerably, additional teachers making possible the introduction of courses in music and art as well as an extension of the rural course. Conveyance services for pupils also had considerably improved, free conveyance being available now for all pupils who attended the school from the Ormond, Kanakanaia, and Whatatutu-Puha districts. Attention had been given during the year to the development of the cultural work of the school, with regard to dramatic work, oratory, art and music. A number of visits had been exchanged with other secondary schools, and it was hoped to extend this line of activity next year. Features of note during the year had been the production of a fulllength school magazine, the development of an historical survey of the district for the Centennial Exhibition, the organisation of a parents’ day, the initiation of the Home and School Association, the development of sports activity, especially swimming, and support from the Old Pupils’ Association: Presentations to Teacher In a short address the headmaster, Mr. R. N. Grono, thanked the school .committee for its splendid support and the material assistance given in providing equipment. Reference was made also to the loyal support of the staff, particularly Mr. A. W. Moverley, senior assistant. The impending departure of Miss J. L. Sanders was viewed with great regret. Reference was made by the headmaster and other speakers to the fine work which Miss Sanders had done and the lasting effect of her influence on the school. On behalf of the pupils, Kathleen Cameron expressed the regret of the scholars at Miss Sanders’ departure, and presented her with a tangible token of their esteem. At a function earlier in the day the staff entertained Miss Sanders at morning tea, when an opportunity was taken by all members of expressing their appreciation of the fine work which Miss Sanders had done and of presenting her with a memento of her association with the school.
