“A TRAP”
NEW REGULATIONS PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS ACTION IN WAIROA (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. The opinion that the new regulations governing pedestrian crossings ■ were not all that were to be desired was expressed by the Mayor of Wairoa, Mr. H. L. Marker, at the monthly meeting of the Borough Council, when it was decided that no action be taken to declare pedestrian crossings under the regulations here. The works committee recommended that for the purposes of the pedestrian crossing and safety zone regulations 1939, which come into force on December 21, the following be declared authorised pedestrian crossings:— Marine’parade from in front of Johansen’s shop northwards to the opposite side of Marine parade; Paul street, Bank of New South Wales corner westward to the opposite side of Paul street. . When explaining the liability of the council' in the event of any crossings being declared, the Mayor stated that tile council simply might be laying a trap for itself. He was of the opinion that it should carry on as it was doing .at present. Cr. Cook: But will we be providing for the safety of the public? The Mayor: I think if we carry on as we are now it will be quite satisfactory. I don’t see why we should put our heads into a noose which might be drawn tighter later on.
Cr. M. J. Gemmcll stated that in his opinion the motorist to-day paid just as much attention to the pedestrian crossings as they would if the crossings were declared. Cr. A. W. Archibald wanted to know what would be done to provide for protection.
The Mayor: Has anything happened in the past year? Cr. Archibald, No, but that is not to say that it will not happen.
Cr. M. J. Gemmeil said that in view of the information given to the meeting by the Mayor, he would move that the clause in the reports dealing with pedestrian crossings be deleted. He felt sure the council was protecting the public just as much by carrying on as it was at present. The motion was seconded by Cr. W. H. Brady and carried.
To Cr. J. O. Scott the Mayor stated that there was no suggestion of doing away with the present crossings. “We will carry on just as we are.”
