FARM VEHICLES
USE ON THE ROADS LICENSING PROVISIONS A copy of information supplied by the Transport Department the Farmers’ Union in regard to farm vehicles on roads was submitted at a meeting of the Poverty Bay provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union yesterday in a circular from head office. The circular stated that any farmer who takes his truck or tractor along a public road must have it registered, but he may take it directly across a road, provided no damage was done to the surface, from one part to another part of his farm without registration or securing a heavy traffic license. In the latter circumstance, however, the vehicle carried no third-party cover. A tractor used soly for agricultural purposes and using the road only in going from farm to farm may secure free registration, secure number-plates at a cost of 2s and third-party insurance at 10s. No heavy-traffic fee was payable, and a refund of the motorspirits tax was obtainable through the post office. A tractor used in hauling produce did not come under that provision.
An unregistered agricultural tractor, truck or trailer might be towed along a road, provided it did not damage the road, but would not have a thirdparty cover unless a special insurance was taken out. A trailer, to secure this privilege, must be used exclusively for agricultural work, and others must pay prescribed fees.
