Christchurch Cathedral, one of the sights of the city, is slowly disintegrating. From time to time pieces of the soft limestone which decorate'it have fallen off, due to the action of wind and rain. A few days ago a substantial piece, 2ft. 6in. long and 6 or 7in. thick, broke away from a window moulding on the north side of the cathedral, but fortunately did not fall to the ground beneath, where a much-used pathway runs. The stone broke into two pieces and. after rolling some feet, stopped on the roof. Some time ago the stone crosses on the small towers at the base of the spire were removed after one had broken away and crashed on to the footpath through the Square.
