YACHTING TROPHY
I 8-FOOTER CHAMPIONSHIP SWINBOURNE?S DEFIANCE ORDERED FROM MEETING (Reed. Dec. 13, 2.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, Dec. 13. B. Swinbourne, skipper of the Australian boat Taree, who has refused to deliver possession of the world’s championship cup, was ordered out of the Eighteen-Footer League’s meeting last night because he refused to withdraw his criticism of the secretary, Mr. J. Giltinan. Mr. Giltinan was explaining the action he had taken to recover the trophy from Swinbourne. The league executive decided that the trophy must be returned by noon on Friday. If not, the executive would meet on Friday night to consider the position. Swinbourne stated after the meeting ♦hat he had no intention of returning the trophy. A cablegram from Sydney on November 22 stated:—Bert Swinbourne, commenting on the demand by the Eighteen-Footers’ League for the return of the world’s championship cup, which he won at Sydney in 1938, said: “Taree is still world’s champion. I won’t give up the trophy until it is properly won.”
The league desires to send the cup to Auckland for presentation to G. Chamberlain, whose boat Manu was declared the champion last season by the Australian Board of Control. Swinbourne claims that the Board of Control’s action in quashing his -appeal against disqualification for the 1939 title series, held at Auckland last February, was unconstitutional.
