NEW YEAR BEACH FETE
WAR FUNDS TO BENEFIT DIGGERS’ ORGANISATION CO-OPERATION ASSURED Proceeds from a carnival to be held at the Waikanae Beach on New Year’s Eve, under the auspices of the social committee of the Gisborne Returned Soldiers' Association, will swell the district patriotic funds. The Diggers’ organisation is assured of the assistance of the Gisborne ThirtyThousand Club in conducting the fete, and is inviting the co-operation of other organised bodies, with a view to ensuring a substantial contribution to the funds now in the hands of the District Patriotic Council. A report of preparations for the fete was made at last night’s meeting of the executive of the Returned Soldiers’ Association by Mr, P. A. Gordon, who stated that an organisation meeting would be held this evening' at the Poverty Bay ElectricPower Board’s rooms, and that several bodies not previously" associated in the conduct of beach carnivals had undertaken to send delegates. The committee hoped to make the fete a real community effort, comparable possibly with that organised by the Poverty Bay Women’s Central Representation Committee in connection with the Show catering, which yielde i sucn handsome results for patriotic purposes.
The executive agreed tp give all possible assistance to the social committee, and to provide a group of workers for the fete. The enterprise of the social committee was warmly commended, and the president, Col R. F. Gambrill, remarked that it was carrying out a duty which devolved on all members of the community at this time.
