ACCESS TO MAHIA
SETTLERS' PLIGHT APPEAL TO MINISTER WAIROA DECISION (Special to the Heruld.) WAIROA, this day. A statement to the effect that it would be disgraceful if something were not done before next winter to provide the settlers at the Mahia Peninsula with better access was made by Cr. H. Bayly at the monthly meeting of the Wairoa County Council yesterday, when he described the (existing state of affairs so far as the access was concerned as shocking. Discussion on the subject arose as a result of advice being received from the district engineer at Napier, Mr. A. Dinnie, that a report on Die proposed deviation on the KopuawharaMahia road had been submitted to hjead office, and a request from it that a lithograph be submitted showing properties served by the road was being acceded to. ' Cr. Bayly stated that it was since February, 1938, that the access to the settlers on the peninsula had been destroyed, and as a result they were totally isolated at periods in the winter. If something was not done for 'the settlers before next winter it would be disgraceful. In his opinion it was a shocking state of affairs, and in view of the fact that so much time had elapsed since the flood when the road was destroyed he thought it was time the council approached Die Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple. It was decided that the Minister be written' to bringing the question again to his notice and asking that some decision be made as soon as possible, ft was agreed also that Mr. E. L. Cullen, M.P., and Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., be written to seeking their assistance.
