News From the Fashion Front

Oliver IMessel has designed evening shoes reminiscent of an Arabian Nights’ fantasy—'curved of toe, fashioned of green suede, and banded in gold kid, with flat spool heels. A swagger sports coat by Matita is made of diagonal plaid, with plain sleeves matching the frock with which it is worn.

.High-heeled boots of black antelope, with the black and green wooden heel joined to the sole, are made by Pinet with a fan .back of upstanding black antelope, reaching up the back of the leg. Harem skirts, launched in Paris for evening, are exemplified by a 'frock by Schiaparelli with ankle-length, turnedunder skirt .over matching boots. A'‘ x makes a floor-length Turkish pantaloon evening coat of brocaded velvet, worn over a flame .dress.

Half-and-half coats arc ithe newest whim. Vionnet’s cape that is .leopardskin in front and black wool at back and sides may be termed either fur economy ‘or cloth extravagance. White blouses could not be more of a rage than they are in Paris this moment. One is made entirely of rows of lace hand-sewn together, and is washable.

Plaids a-plenty in Paris, and they may even be made of patchwork. Belong stitches rows of multi-coloured patches ,on to a full black skirt for day wear, with a black astrakhan-banded jacket. Heads and necks are ringed round

with fashion in the autumn styles in London. A'gnes is making skein hats of twisted wool, worn with a silk scarf overflowing from the neckline of the frock, and “Crusader” hats in chainmail mesh are 'being made iby Vionnet. Coats for next autumn will have that tingly outdoor look, and will feature full skirts and nipped-in waists. The new colours include pigeon blue, carbon .blue, Tuscan grape, port brown, sand-dove, and, of course, navy and black. i

De Bayou calls her black wool dress, with a surprise streak of Victorian puce dowm the back, “Merry Widow” because it is worn with a shiny black straw hat, with a gossamer black jersey veil. From Paris comes a little bolero of French net, all abloom with purple, ■mauve and pink azaleas, hand sewn over every inch, so that most of the ■pink flowers are massed at the edges to look like a .real flower garden.

A quick way to bake potatoes in their jackets is to put them in boiling water first. Simmer very gently for 10 minutes and then take out and dry. Place the potatoes in the oven. They will be cooked in half the time, and will be beautifully floury inside. During cold weather dripping often becomes hard, and is difficult to use. A good idea when making pastry in which dripping is being used is to use a fork. In this way the dripping can be scraped into Hie flour and a great deal of time saved.
