“Bathroom” Afternoon
A delightful “bathroom” afternoon was given last Saturday by Mrs. A. W. Houghton at her home in Makaraka in honour of Miss M. Walker, whose marriage takes place next week.
The drawing-room, where the guests were entertained, was fragrant with bowls of Argentine peas and rambler roses.
Several amusing competitions were held, the winners being Mesdames Thomson and Morgan and Misses Walker, Ancell and Cox. A delicious afternoon tea was served, after which the bride-to-be, assisted by Mrs. Houghton and Miss Cox, opened the many gift parcels, revealing a useful array of articles for the bathroom of her future home. Miss Walker thanked her hostess and guests for such a happy afternoon. Mrs, Houghton received the guests wearing a frock of mulberry satinbacked crepe. Miss Walker chose a model frock of rust crepe roinaine, with vestee and bolero of matching satin. Those present included Mesdames Walker, Morgan, Thomson, Neilson, Costello, Wright and Gilchrist; Misses R Cox, Walker, L. Cutts, A. and J. Waugh, J. and L. Ancell.
A delicious light sponge cake can be made without using any self-raising flour, baking-powder, or any other raising ingredient, provided loaf-sugar Ls used instead of ordinary sugar. The loaf-sugar must be (broken slightly in cold water, and then boiled for one minute, before adding to the mixture. It is found that the chemicals which are used in the manufacture of loaf-sugar to keep it in shape contain cake-raising properties.
