CENTRAL PARADE CALVES FROM NGATAPA FIRST THREE PLACES PUHA’S LAMB SUCCESSES Bringing to a close the annual display held by school clubs throughout the Gisborne and East Coast districts. much interest was shown in the central calf parade held on the Gisborne showgrounds yesterday, when selected calves from district schools came forward, in addition to short-woolled and long-woolled lambs. Thirty calves were paraded from Makaraka, Manutuke, Ngatapa, Ormond, Patutahi. Puha, Tolaga Bay. Wacrenga-a-hika, Waipaoa and Whatatutu. The calves were judged by Mr. N. F. Burrows, while Mr. B. C. Jeffreys judged the lambs. Following a demonstration given by Mr. Burrows, score cards were issued for a judging competition, which was won by Ernest Kent and Ernest White, who tied for first place. The Awards The Ngatapa School had the greatest success in the calf class, securing the first three awards, while Puha took five out of six places among the lambs. The judge’s awards were: — Calves. —Irvine Dolman, Ngatapa. 1; Peggy Angland, Ngatapa 2; Noeline McKay, Ngatapa, 3; Rex MeGrannachan, Patutahi, 4. Short-wool Lambs. —Sylvia Bridge, Puha, 1; Hugh Bridge, Puha. 2; Peter Graham, Puha, 3. Long-wool Lambs. —Eldon Bayly, Fuha, 1; Nancy Binnic. Tolaga Bay. 2, Russell McGregor, Puha, 3. Valuable Work During an interval, Mr. T. A. Coleman, a member of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, addressed those piescnt. He apologised for the unavoidable absence of Mr. J. S. Wauchop, deputy chairman of the board, and said that the board was very pleased to see the progress made by the calf clubs in the district, for a high value was placed on the work being done by boys and girls’ agricultural and calf clubs. The experiei ce gained in rearing and caring for calves and lambs would tend to make the club members better _ farmers when they took up their life work later on. Mr. C. G. Calvert, school agricultural instructor, thanked all those who had assisted in the conduct of the parade, and expressed his pleasure at ;he keenness of the children and the parents of the district. The prize certificates were presented to the winner’s by the chairnan of the committee controlling the effort, Mr. P. T. Weeks, Tolaga Bay. who referred to the excellent work done by Mr. Calvert in connection with the school clubs The committee controlling the effort comprised: —Messrs. Weeks, F. RBould, C. G. Calvert, R. N. Grono, R. I. Harrison, -L T. Herbert, M. S. Mooney .and the hon. secretary, Mr. W. E. Chamberlain. Mr. Bould was Ihe marshal for the parade. Stewards for the parade were drawn from pupils of the Gisborne High School and of other district schools, and were: M. Allen, .1. Edwards, A. Hills. H. Moore. D. McGregor, R. Owen, D. Robinson. R. White, and T. White.
