Raced Through Mediterranean

“On the trip to Australia the ship was blacked out and carried guns,” stated a Palmerston North resident who has just returned from England. “The boat was not in a convoy, but all the way from Tilbury to Gibraltar it kept well'away from the ordinary routes and raced all the time, zigzagging constantly. I asked an officer what the fuel-oil consumption would -be and he said that normally it was 90 tons a day, but was then 120 tons a day. The ship stayed at Gibraltar for a short time and then raced . through the Mediterranean to Suez. All the passengers carried their lifebelts and the stewards wore theirs all .the time, on their backs and ready to slip over their heads.”
