PEOPLE'S DAY
ROYAL SHOW GATHERING OPENED BY GOVERNOR (Pur Press Association.) ■ INVERCARGILL, this day. Following the successful opening of the Royal Show yesterday, People’s Day is being held to-day. The weather is again fine and calm following an early morning shower. A record entry of horses will be judged to-day as well as a few sections of sheep and cattle which were not completed yesterday through the non-arrival of the judges owing to the stormy weather conditions in the north delaying them. Yesterday the show lost some of its attractiveness through the absence of sideshows owing to the dispute with the society continuing, but those interested in stock found sufficient to occupy their attention. There is an ipipressive display, especially of dairy cattle.
The attendance for the opening day was very satisfactory but with a halfholiday in the city to-day a record irowd is expacted. Additional championship awards are as follow: — Romney Marsh—Ram: D. Robertson (Waiku'kui). 1: reserve, Peter Campbell (Wyndham). The Show reached a climax this afternoon with the official opening by the Governor - General, Viscount Galway, followed toy the grand parade of prize-winning stock and the second heat of the Dominion championship jump, in which many of the best hunters in New Zealand took part. Speakers at the official opening included the president of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association, Mr. R. Kennedy, and the Mayor of Invercargill, Mr. J. R. Hanan, 'both of whom paid tribute -to the excellence of the stock exhibits and the part played"toy early pioneers developing the province of 'Southland and New Zealand in general. 1 (Clydesdales and light horses were judged 'this morning as well as collie dogs and those sheep sections Hot completed yesterday. Judging was completed in time for the grand parade, which was witnessed toy many thousands.
