BAN ON ADMISSIONS

OTAGO MEDICAL SCHOOL FOREIGN REFUGEES DURATION OF THE WAR (Por Proas Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. The admission of foreign refugees to the Otago Medical School was lengthily discussed by the University Council under a resolution to rescind the previous motion refusing admission to Mrs. Fletselil. It was eventually decided to admit her because she had come to New Zealand on a definite understanding from the High Commissioner's Office that she could continue her studies here. Mrs. Flctschl wrote that she had been induced to settle here though she had already secured a place in “for America where she could complete her medical course in 18 months as against three years here.” The final resolution admitting her set out that it was because of the special circumstances mentioned and the feeling of the council was finally expressed in its refusal to grant two men the seme privilege though one had been admitted by the New Zealand University. Dr. Fitzgerald then gave notice to move that no more refugees be admitted for the duration of the war.

Finally it was decided to acquaint the High Commissioner, Mr. W. J. Jordan, through the Prime Minister, the Hon. M. J. Savage, with the position regarding the admission of student doctors.
