“HAPPY FAMILY”

FRIENDLY CO-OPERATION WORK OF THE COUNCIL “OPPOSITION BENCHES” Mention of the friendly co-operation among members of the Gisborne Borough Council throughout the year was made at last night’s council meeting, which was the last of the current year. The Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., referred to this when extending the season’s greetings to the councillors and staff, a reply being made by Cr. H. E. Maude, who humorously described his statements as being on behalf of the “opposition ibenches.” Mr. Coleman said that the year had been a very .pleasant one in the council. Councillors had had their little differences, but their discussions had always been carried out in the best spirit. He thanked the councillors for their very loyal co-operation during the year, and he appreciated that very much indeed. On behalf of Mrs. Coleman and himself, he extended the very best of wishes to the councillors, the staff and the press for a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. The deputy-Mayor, Cr. J. H. Hall, reciprocated, and trusted that Mrs. Coleman would be improved in health. Cr. Maude acknowledged the Mayor’s good wishes on behalf of the “opposition benches.” He added that those occupying the “Government benches” were reasonable men who had the interests of the residents at heart. “We have been quite a happy family during the' year,” Mr. Maude continued, “and there is no reason why this should not continue in the future, and I am sure that there will be no captious interference with you or your policy. I wish to extend to you and Mrs. Coleman the very best of wishes for the coming year.” The council agreed that the next meeting should be held on January 9.
