ACUTE SHORTAGE

BUILDING MATERIALS IMMEDIATE ACTION URGED Describing the shortage of building materials as acute the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce has telegraphed to the Minister of Customs, the Hon. W. Nash, urging that immediate steps be taken to meet the situation. The telegram, drafted by a subcommittee appointed by the chamber, reads: — “Builders and merchants here are much concerned regarding the shortage of building materials, including galvanised iron, nails, pipe, linseed oil, electrical requisites and many other lines. Serious effects are already being felt by building and other industries. “It is understood that many submissions have been made to your department, and that undue delays are aggravating the situation. Unemployment, specially in the building industry, is imminent as a direct result of the shortages referred to. The delay in the issue Of licenses and the placing of orders is penalising New Zealand as prices increase overseas from day to day. This chamber respectfully urges that immediate steps be taken to meet the situation, which has become acute.”
