ROUGH CROSSING
MONTEREY IN TASMAN FALL FROM BUNK CROCKERY BROKEN NO SERIOUS INJURIES (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. The Matson liner Monterey, which arrived from Sydney, experienced a rough Tasman crossing. About 4.30 a.m. yesterday, said one traveller, the ship rolled heavily and a woman in at least one cabin was thrown out of her bed on to the floor. Everything on the dressing-table crashed to the floor .also, and outside there was a crash of falling crockery and other things. On one occasion, when the seas were at their worst, it was stated that the cabin class dining-tables were .set in readiness for the meal. Dishes, glassware and silver crashed to the floor. There was sugar everywhere underfoot from the upturned pots. An inquiry .from the hospital on board elicited the fact that there had been no serious injury. A few people had been shaken by falls and one man had suffered a few scratches to his face.
The stewards estimated the damage to the crockery at between £SOO and £OOO, tout Captain Johansen denied that. The chief steward, he said, would report to him all the damage done, and he had not heard of any great damage. There had been one incident concerning 20 glass containers filled with ice in one of the pantries, he said. They had been all ready for placing on the tables, and when the vessel had rolled they had all crashed to the floor. Some of the silver had been thrown about, but that avould not damage. “There was a bit of a swell,” he admitted.
