WAIROA RIVER MOUTH

FURTHER SHIFT REPORTED CONDITIONS AT HEADS BEACH CHANNEL (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. During the past month the mouth of the Wairoa River has travelled a further chain and a half along the beach, according to the report of the pilot, Mr. W. Jane, which was submitted tb the Wairoa Harbour Board at its monthly meeting yesterday. The pilot added that the channel was working along the beach cutting back along the centre of the beach to the west. It was following a bank of soft papa, which extended out nearly to the seaward side of the beach, and a bank of shingle had built up to a height of 10ft. This bank was three chains wide. This left the channel running between fairly high banks for four chains, and the position was favourable for a blockage with a heavy sea. The report added that no shipping had worked the port due to the shallow nature of the bar and channel. The flats showed a depth of 71ft., and the depth of water in the channel from the bluff down to the bar was from 4ft. to 1 t. During the past month the bar had been good on five days with a depth of sft at high water.
