CONTROL OF IMPORTS

AUSTRALIAN ACTION BUSINESS HEAD APPROVES (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. A director of R. B. Davies, Proprietary, Limited, Sydney, Mr. R. B. Davies, who is a through passenger by the Monterey, is the controller of one of the 13 munitions annexes under the supervision of-the Commonwealth Government. The company has been engaged in making hand grenades for the past two years and the outbreak of war has meant a heavy increase in orders. “That is not my business,” he said, when asked if the grenades were shipped to other parts of the Empire. He added that the manufacturers of war weapons did not consider the question of profit, the work being looked upon in the light of a national undertaking.

Speaking of import control in Australia, Mr. Davies said it was necessary that all Dominions should introduce such a Scheme in order to prevent the pound Sterling slipping, as compared with the American dollar. Now that Britain was buying munitions from America, it was necessary that the dollar exchange should be conserved.
