MAKETU MEMORIAL

Instead of a stone arched shelter the Maketu Centennial Committee has decided to erect an obelisk 20ft in height as a Centennial memoria 1 at Maketu, Bay of Plenty. Flanked on the seaward side by a figure of Tamatekapua, navigator of the Arawa canoe, and constructed of stone from the Maketu estuary named after the high priest of the canoe, Neatoroirangi, the memorial will preserve the memory of the great Arawa leaders.
