ITALY’S NEUTRALITY
STATUS REAFFIRMED ATTITUDE TO BRITAIN i Reed. Dec. 9. 9 a.m.) ROME, Dee. 8. A communique states that the Fascist Grand Council re-affirmed Italy’s neutrality and also that ItalianGerman relations remain those established by the pact of alliance and by exchanges which have since occurred between the two countries. The communique says that Signor Mussolini addressed the Fascist Grand Council for an hour and a half. The Foreign Minister, Count Ciano. spoke for two hours and a quarter, after which the council instructed Count Ciano to “follow attentively all the developments in the international situation,'' and added that whatever occurs in the Balkans and the Danube Valley directly interests Italy.
The council also declared that Italy intended to safeguard tier shipping by all means.
It is stated that the council decided that the war developments fully justified Italy’s decision to remain non-belligerent, a decision which, so 'far. had prevented an extension of tile conflict to south-east-ern Europe and the Mcdiaterranean.
