NEWS OF THE DAY

Obstruction of View The fact that branches of trees in the plantation at Okitu, Wainui Beach, obstructed the view of motorists of vehicles coming off a side road was brought to the notice of the Gisborne advisory committee of the Automobile Association (Auckland) yesterday afternoon, when it was decided that Dr. A. L. Singer should report the position to the commissioner of Crown lands, Mr. H. L. Primrose. Volunteers Farcwelled A pleasant gathering was held in the Orange Hall on Wednesday evening, under the auspices of the Gisborne Scottish and Caledonian Society, at which were present members of the non-commissioned officers’ draft called up to enter camp this week. During the evening each of the guests was presented with a gift of smoking materials, and a special presentation was made to Sergeant J. M. Crawford, a member of the society. Harbour Basin Swimming There are 19 nominations for the harbour basin swim for the W. Barrington Miller Cup, which will be decided at 4 p.m. to-morrow. The competitors will be handicapped on the mark, the entries received being from Misses H. McKnight and J. McGregor, and K. Morse, D. Lange, R. Taylor, B. Smale, N. Tolerton, P. Hamilton, G. Clarke, I. G. Shaw, W. Appleby, A. Banfield, D. Robinson, A. PI. DeCosta, B. Wallace, P. Wilson, R. Cowley, H. Holmes, and T. Fairweather. Glare at Memorial Clock Tower Remedies for the elimination of the glare of the floodlights at the Robinson Memorial clock tower in Gladstone road were suggested yesterday afternoon at the meeting of the Gisborne advisory committee ot the Automobile Association (Auckland). The resident A.A. patrol, Mr. G. V. Merton, said the glare was most noticeable to motorists travelling in an easterly direction and looking over to the right at the Grey street intersection for approaching traffic. It was decided to write to the Poverty Bay Electric-Power Board suggesting that its engineer might confer on the matter with Mr. Merton and the borough traffic inspector, Mr. T.. G. Nowell. Labour Party Rally The special Labour Party rally held in Kaitaratahi on the recent visit of Mr. J. Thorn, M.P. for Thames, was highly successful. The attendance was large, and Messrs. D. W. Coleman and A. G. Hultquist, the Gisborne and Bay of Plenty Parliamentary representatives, were with the visiting speaker on the platform, Mr. C. E. Mills taking the chair. Mr. Thorn spoke on various matters of interest to Labour supporters and later answered a number of questions. Messrs. Coleman and Hultquist also spoke briefly, and at the conclusion of the meeting supper was served by a committee of ladies and the gathering later enjoyed dancing. Mr; Lennane supplied the dance music and Mr. T. L. Earnshaw acted as M.C.

Force of Example Though recently the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, forwarded to the Arawa Returned Soldiers’ League an intimation that only in special circumstances would men over the age limits of their respective groups be admitted to the camp of the special Maori Battalion, it is now reported from Whangarei that Mr. Lou Parore. an elder of the Ngapuhi tribe who is well beyond the admissible age, has received instructions to proceed to camp. This instruction, issued apparently by Army Department headquarters, is believed to foreshadow a recruiting drive among the Maoris of the north, and the Ngapuhi tribesmen anticipate that leading members of other tribes also will be called upon to spend some weeks in camp, with the object of giving a lead to younger men in their respective communities.
