PRESIDENT'S FOURS
GISBORNE CLUB ROWING TWO RACES COMPLETED A start was made early last evening with two races in the President’s Fours series of the Gisborne Rowing Club fdr the cup and miniatures presented by Mr. C. W. Muir. On account of the low condition of the tide the events were raced on the Waimata River mile and a-quarter course. The first of the Miller Cup events, between the semi-finalists of the Gisborne and Poverty Bay clubs, will take place on Saturday, and the deciding races in. the series will be raced on Monday. K. Easton, str., J. Hankey, P. Sceats, and L. Ellmers defeated T. N. Bright, str., W. J. Hoy, K. G. Monk and J. Perrett. The start was an even one and at the William, Pettie bridge Easton was about a ! canvas in the lead, which he increased to a length at. the Kaiti bridge. From that point on he was never troubled and won by two lengths of clear water. S. Allen, str.. R. Mahon, J. Francis, and L. Osmond defeated L. J. Wihstanley, str., E. Puddick, G. Montgomery, and I. Menzies. Allen had slightly the better of the start and was a shade ahead at the William Pettie bridge. He further increased his lead and was over a length in front at the railway bridge. Later in the race he put more water between the boats, but Winstanley made a strong bid and reduced the winning margin to a length and a-quarter. There will be two more first round races this evening on the Waimata River course, A. F. Allen meeting .1. Gemmell and T. Williams racing A. M. Terry.
