WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
TAKITIMU The November meeting of the Takitimu Women's Institute took place at No. 1 Fitzherbert street. There was a good attendance, and the president, Mrs. Rangiuia, was in the chair. Miss Hitchen demonstrated a Christmas novelty which greatly interested members. The competitions resulted. —Lady's spray: Mrs. C. Lyndon, 1; Mrs. Keiha, 2; Mrs. Blair, 3. Jam jar of flowers: Mrs. Pitt. 1: Mrs. Keiha, 2; Mrs. Cassin 3. The next meeting will take place on December 14. KORANGA The Monthly meeting of the Koranga Women's Institute was held at Mrs. Judd’s home on November 16, Mrs. Bell presiding over six members. It was decided to contribute books to start an institute library, each member bringing three books. The roll call, “What is known of some foreign country," proved very interesting. The competition, an inexpensive Christmas gift, brought forth a good ..display of entries. Mrs. Bell proved the winner, with Mrs. Peach second. Mrs. Bell was the hostess for afternoon tea and social halfhour. TE KARAKA Presiding at the November meeting of the Te Karalca Women’s Institute Mrs. .1. V. Castles extended a cordial welcome to Miss J. Sanders and the girls from the secondary department of the school, who were invited to witness a display of physical culture given by Miss Bunty Ddbson. Gisborne. All derived much pleasure from the display, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the demonstrator. 'Birthday greetings from the Poverty Bay federation were road, the November meeting being ihe Te Knraka institute’s ninth 'birthday. It whs announced that orders would be taken for “Pioneer Tales of New Zealand," a copy of which was on view.
A notification from the Dominion federation was to Hie effect that henceforth Home and Country would be the federation’s official circuital - .
It was decided lo hold a Christmas fair on the Recreation Ground on December 16, various stalls and entertainment to toe arranged. The hostesses for the meeting were Mesdames Charteris, Clayton and Robinson.
WAERENGA-A-HIKA The monthly meeting of the Wae-renga-a-hika Institute was held at Waerenga-a-hika on Tuesday. There was a good attendance. Apologies were received from Mrs. Gartshore, Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Richardson. A delegate was chosen for the meeting to be held in December in Gisborne. The treasurer gave a satisfactory account of the funds. The trades table was a success. The Institute picnic is to be held at Waiherere on January 3. 1040. HINETAPORA At the monthly meeting of the Hinetapora Women’s Institute on Saturday, November 25, Mrs. Milner presided over a good attendance. The competitions resulted. —'Something made out of a sugar bag: Mrs. R. Tainihere and Miss Q. Fox, equal, I; Miss Q. Fox, 3; Mesdames Tamihere and Poi, equal, 4. Flax kit, A class: Mrs. Morrell, 1. B class: Mrs. Milner, 1. Camp oven loaf: Miss Q. Fox, 1; Mrs. K. Milner, 2. The hostesses were Miss Q. Fox and Mesdames W r anoa and Grace. TUAI The Tuai Women’s Institute, held its monthly meeting in the new social hall on the afternoon of November 22 with a good attendance of members. Mrs. Munro read her report on the conference she attended in Wairoa. Mrs. F. Hill, Wairoa, was welcomed by the president, Mrs, Eban, and presented with a shoulder spray. Mrs. Hill gave some interesting demonstrations on how to make quilted cushions, Christmas novelties and children’s sox out of discarded men's sox. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The motto was “Never trouble trouble, till trouble troubles you," and the roll call, “Washday Hints." Competition winners were: —Bloom. —Mrs. Nicol. 1. Cooking: Madiera Cake. —Mrs. Rosenberg, 1. Handwork: Most useful workbag.—Mrs. McLeod. 1. The hostesses. Mesdames Hawthorne. C. Dawson, and Frame, provided a tasty afternoon tea.
