Some indication of what tax is imposed on smokers is given in the annual report of the National Tobacco Company. On every 2ox. tin of New Zealand tobacco, costing, say, Is Del a tin, Is goes to the Government in the form of taxation in one way or another, leaving the manufacturer 9cl lo cover the cost of the' leaf, the processing and manufacturing of the leaf, lilts, cannisters, containers, paper and other packing material, freight, distribution, and wholesale and retail profits. In other words 55 per cent of the purchase price is taken by the State, and the remaining 45 per cent is divided among the grcnvei* manufacturer, wholesale merchant and the retailer.
