TITLE TRIAL CALTAUX AND DAVIS MATCH IN GISBORNE MONDAY’S TOURNAMENT Advice has been received by the Gisborne Boxing Association that the meeting of Vie Caltaux and Jack Davis in Gisborne next Monday evening will be in the nature of a championship elimination, for the winner is to have a chance at the welterweight championship, now claimed by Stan Jenkln. The title was rendered vacant owing to the retirement of Neville Mudgway, and Jenkin, as the former holder, has first claim. He will defend his claim against either Davis or Caltaux in Dunedin shortly. The New Zealand Boxing Council has directed that the championship cannot be held without a fight, and the Otago association has arranged a match accordingly. As an amateur, Caltaux was regarded as one of the crudest boxers ever to come to the top of his class, whereas Davis came close to winning the championship on two occasions, and showed a good deal of skill as well as a capacity to hand out punishment and absorb it. Since joining the cash ranks, Caltaux hase shown a remarkable change in style, and though he has not lost his punch and pugnacity, lie has beaten some of the best imported welters in fights that went the full distance.
It can be taken that Monday’s fight will provide plenty of hard hitting and the* issue is very open.
With Darcy Hceney, Tom Baty, and Bob Hadwen figuring in special amateur bouts with Auckland boxers in their respective classes, the amateur portion oi the programme will be exceptionally interesting. Mr. R. Blackwell will referee the amateur bouts, and Mr. J. Heeney will have charge of the ring during the professional fight.
