LOSSES AT SEA
BRITISH VESSELS COLLIER HITS MINE U-BOAT SHELLS STEAMER FRENCH CLAIM VICTIM (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 2.50 p.m. RUGBY, Dec. 1. According to agency messages the British collier Sheaf Crest Avas sunk by a mine in the North Sea this morning. Fifteen of the crew were seriously injured. The survivors were picked up by a warship, Avhich is taking them to an east coast of England port, and 15 others have been landed by a lifeboat. After missing with torpedoes, a German U-boat shelled the British steamer Uskmouth for 2i hours until she burst into flames and sank off the Spanish coast on Saturday night. Twenty-two of the crew of 25 got away in the ship’s lifeboat. After sailing for 25 hours they were picked up by an Italian motor vessel and landed at a south-east coast port to-day. A French evening communique states: “There has been usual activity of our patrols. One of our torpedoboats successfully attacked an enemy submarine.”
