Volunteer Farewelled

The former Poverty Bay hockey and Rugby football representative, Wattle McKay, who left Hastings yesterday to enter camp with others chosen, for non-commissioned rank in the Maori Battalion, was farewelled by fellow-members at the Tomoana freezing works, and received the gift of an inscribed silver watch. Since taking up residence in Hastings, Mr. McKay has represented his new district in Rugby football, cricket, and hockey, and has made his mark in lawn tennis and badminton. Pie is regarded as one of the finest all-round athletes in Hawke’s Bay, and latterly had added chess to his other pastimes, becoming a promising member of the Hastings Chess Club.
