Much of the success was due to the social committee of the Gisborne Returned Soldiers’ Association, which -was responsible for £6O of the profit shown in the accounts. Those present at the -meeting were Messrs. Jas. Chrisp, chairman, M. J. White, A. J. Cox, H. L. Primrose, H. B. Tyerman, J. W. Fergie, W. M. Jenkins, T. G. Johns, W E. Mclhvaine, W. Oakden, PI. Marriner, Dr. A. L. Singer, and the secretary, Mr. W. Kohn. Notice was received- from the Gisborne Borough Council that the name Centennial Marine Drive had been approved for the Waikanae foreshore road, now under construction. The Provincial Centennial (Council wrote expressing thanks for the aid given toy the Queen carnival committee of the Thirty-Thousand Club.
Nominations of members were received as follows: —-Poverty Bay Golf Club, Dr. F. Kahlertberg; Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harriers’ Club, Mr. R. J. Quinn; Poverty Bay Electric Power Board, Messrs. F. R. Ball and C. W. Izod; Poverty Bay Cricket Association, Messrs. J. de V. W. Blathwayit and G. Revell. A. letter relative to trophies for inter-house sports was referred to the sub-committee dealing with this section. Ex-Servicemen’s Efforts (Much satisfaction was expressed concerning the outcome of thd Guy Fawke’s Night celebration at the beach, and credit was given to the social committee of the Gisborne Returned Soldiers’ Association for its substantial contribution not only to the financial success obtained—this group having raised over £6O by its specialised efforts—(but alsb to the general enjoyment of the public. A question was raised as to whether fireworks should form a part of the celebrations at the beach in future, and after discussion, it was decided that the celebrations committee should have power to act in this matter.
It was agreed that the ThirtyThousand Club should give its full support to the Gisborne RGiA. in connection with that organisation’s plan for a New Year’s Eve celebration at the Waikanae Beach, and that fireworks be distributed free to as many children as possible on that occasion. Suggestions for the improvement of beach carnivals included better lighting for entertainment features, and the arrangement of supper catering by ladies’ committees.
In respect of the Centennial Marine Drive, Mr. A. J. Cox reported that the cost of bulldozer work to date was £7B 8s 6d. The executive agreed to donate another £SB 16s to the centennial committee for this work, this sum, with the Government subsidy, being sufficient to meet the cost of bulldozer work.
Re-Alignment of Drive-way
There is a balance of £lB 18s available in the Centennial Marine drive account, which, together with the subsidy, should pay for fencing materials required, It was reported. The committee acknowledged a gift of 200 '.battens from Mr. T. Adair, and further donations were pending, it was stated.
'Mr. Cox reported that, with the co-operation of Mr. J. H. Hall and other members of the Gisborne Borough Council, the line of the roadway had been altered so as to give more space between the road and the highwater mark on the beach. It was considered that this would be of great benefit in the future. Mr. Cox confidently predicted that the road would be open as far as the Awapuni lagoon by October, 1940, the month in which the Poverty Bay and East Coast celebrations would be held. Discussion took place as to the objects to which funds raised by projected speed-boat and inter-house sports fixtures should be devoted. A suggestion that the club should give a lead in connection with patriotic effort was put forward by Mr. White, and received general support, but the weight of opinion was in favour of advancing the centennial programme as far as possible in the meantime.
The club agreed, however, to make an application to the East Coast Patriotic Council for permission to hold a patriotic function at a date to be fixed later.
