Lemons Remain Unpicked Because of unsatisfactory returns for the work involved, a number of Hawke's Bay citrus-growers are reported to be leaving their lemons on the trees rather than pick them for marketing.
Long' Trip For Medical Aid The five-year-old son of the Cape Palliser lighthouse-keeper, Mr. Nelson, broke a leg while playing near the lighthouse on Monday evening. He was carried on a stretcher over four miles of sand, then taken by car to Featherston. After medical treatment there the boy was taken on to Masterton, where he is now in hospital.
Military Engineers’ Work To build a suspension bridge with a span of 122 ft. across a ravine in 43 hours was the remarkable achievement of a company of 24 members of the New Zealand Engineers at Taupiri. The bridge spans a gorge at the old Taupiri quarry, near the Taupiri Maori cemetery.
Camp Marquee Burned A marquee used on occasions as a lecture tent was destroyed by fire at the central mobilisation camp, Trentham, on Wednesday. It had not been in use during the day, and, although there was a picket near it until noon, five minutes after it was ablaze. It burned from the top down. No other damage was done.
Maori Language Ignorance of the Maori language in New Zealand was appalling, said the Rev. Lawrence Rogers in an address to the Christchurch Business Men’s Club. “Maori as spoken in Christchurch is not Maori,” said Mr. Rogers, who said it worried him to hear people chewing over the language. Actually, he said, the Maori language was simple to learn, although some people considered it difficult.
Spoilt by Salt Spray
Months of careful preparation for an outstanding display of blooms in Napier’s Marine parade gardens was undone early this week when a gusty wind which whipped showers of spray inshore destroyed between 3000 and 4000 late spring and early summer bedding plants. The losses represent nearly 50 different species, according to the superintendent of parks and reserves, Mr. C. Corner.
