WORMS ASSIST BOWLERS
Worms play an important part in maintaining a good bowling green. Too many can spoil the level surface. Too few allow the ground to become bound and the grass dies. After the week-end rain the Whangarei Bowling Club’s greens were dotted with small mounds of earth, the work of the industrious worm brought out bv the rain. If the greens were rolled with these mounds, small lumps would be formed which would divert the bowls, ,so, prior to rolling, the mounds are scooped up. The story is told of one green where it was decided to remove all the worms. This was done, but the disastrous results, as the ground was not aerated. In the end. worms had to be collected from other sources and again placed in the greens.
