TARANAKI SLUMPS WAIKATO 62 FOR THREE (Per Press Association.) HAMILTON, this day. The Hawke Cup cricket match between Waikato, the holders, and Taranaki opened yesterday. The match did not commence until 2.30, owing to rain, and at the close of the day’s play the position was very open. Taranaki was sent in to bat and lost two wickets in the first over. Eventually they were all out for 87. Barker played brightly for 30 and the captain, Lash, defended stubbornly for 25 not out. Clough took five wickets for 26. Waikato had 45 without the loss of a wicket, and then lost three batsmen without further addition to the total. At stumps the score was 62 for three wickets.
