Among the Maoris of the Gisborne and East Coast district the eifect of the yecenl announcement that New Zealand troops are to be sent overseas is becoming apparent in. a second wave of enlistments. The latest lists received from area recruiting officers contains a large proportion of young single men, and a new development has been noted in the "family marathon,” in which competition has been keenly followed by Maoris in various parts of the district.
The Waenga family, of Hicks Bay, leads the marathon at present with seven brothers among the volunteers for service with the Maori Battalion, tlie names of the brothers being reported by the area recruiting officer as Ruakirikiri. Henry, Waihi, Tawhai. Moutara, Repi, and Joe, the lastnamed being included in the latest list of area recruits.
