ENEMY SUBJECTS

WIVES AND FAMILIES RELIEVING DISTRESS JOHANNESBURG, Oct. 20. The Union Government's scheme foi the 'alleviation of distress among dependants of interned enemy subjects is nearing completion, and, with the conclusion of negotiations between the Department of Finance and the Department of Prisons regarding the scale which will form the basis of relief, the details of the scheme will be announced. The Government already has approved of the creation by the German community in the Union of a Huelfsverein, a voluntary organisation to provide assistance for the dependants of internees. A non-political Deutsche Huelfsverein, or German Air Society, operated in South Africa during the Great War, and the German community requested permission to form a similar organisation during the present conflict to relieve the plight of the wives and families of interned enemy subjects.
