NEW IZB STATION
PROTEST BY WOMEN EXPENDITURE OF £70,000 NATIONAL COUNCIL VIEWS (Strong disapproval of the action ol the Government in planning a new commercial 'broadcasting station building in Auckland was expressed at the monthly meeting of the Auckland branch of the National Council of Women. The president, Miss G. M. Hemus, presided. The executive brought forward a recommendation stating that the Auckland branch of the council 'strongly disapproved the expenditure of £70,000 on a new building for broadcasting while the building projects of vital and fundamental necessity to the well-being of national life 'such as the new St. Helens Hospital, and increased accommodation for overcrowded schools, were being held in abeyance.
Two members, one of whom stated that she was on the staff of IZB. spoke against the recommendation. The first speaker described a meeting room in the present premises as the "'black hole of Calcutta,” while the second to speak against the remit stated that the money was being borrowed at a fixed rate of interest, and not given.
'Several members referred to the lack ol accommodation at St. Helens •Hospital, while others considered that, in war time at any rate, four broadcasting stations were not absolutely necessary in Auckland. Another member stated that IZB was a commercial concern and that it should be subject to some of the restrictions that other commercial organisations were at present experiencing. The recommendation was carried.
