RUGBY UNION GAME
DREW 15,000 IN U.S.A. "SIMILAR TO FOOTBALL" Rugby Union in America has gained such a hold that in a recent game between Chicago and Victor McLaglen’s Hollywood team, it drew a crowd of 15,000 —and the match was played at night! Chicago, apparently, is top of the walk over there because it had won 19 matches on end and piled up 261 points to its opponents’ 16.
The game, as played in America, according to Edward Prell, sports writer for the Chicago Tribune, “is similar to football, because, due to American influence. running and passing arc emphasised more than is the case in English Rugby." For the benefit of his readers, brought up in the school of grid-liron football, he explains the points in the Rugby game by pointing out: "A Rugger wears only a sweater, shorts and shoes, with no protective padding of any nature.
"It is easily understood that the scantily-clad athletes usually .are pretty well banged up at the end of a tough game.”
