PLAYERS TO DECIDE
CRICKET AT CHRISTMAS TEAMS FOR REP. TRIAL HAWKE CUP CHALLENGE The decision in regard to the playing of club matches on December 23 will be left to the players, according to a motion passed yesterday afternoon at the meeting of the management committee of the Poverty Bay Cricket Association. Club delegates were asked to ascertain the views ol the members they represented and report back to the next meeting. Those present were Messrs. J. deV. W. Blathwayt, chairman, G. A. Revell, E. W. Bilham, P. H. Dow, A. E. Bignall, C. Fraser, G. E. Slade, R. H. Cook, and the hon. secretary, Mr. D. A. Wells.
The secretary of the New Zealand Cricket Council wrote advising that the only challenge for the Hawke Cup prior to that entered by Poverty Bay at New Year would be that of Taranaki, the latter match to be played at the end of the week. Tile resignation of Mr. W. Stewart from the committee on account of indifferent health and pressure of business was received with regret. Tiie chairman remarked on the keen interest Mr. Stewart had always shown in the sport, and that his position would be difficult to fill. Tiie co-operation of the association was sought by the Gisborne ThirtyThousand Club in any further fixtures that that organisation conducted, Messrs. Blathwayt and Revell being appointed as the association’s representatives who could he called upon for assistance. Possibles and Probables Tiie teams for tiie second representative trial to take place next weekend at 10 a.m. were announced as follows: —- Possibles. —P. If. Dow, captain, R. Thomson, T. M. Sharp, J. K. Somervell, E. F. James, F. Newton, A. Fisher, t,. Gardner. T. White, A. McLean, and I. Niven.

The possibility of transferring the senior B grade matches now prayed on the school concrete wicket to the representative wicket on the Oval was a point raised by Mr. Bignall. It was decided to obtain the feeling of the clubs on the matter before reaching a decision next week. An appeal was made to have as many of the players as possible patronise the afternoon tea served at the Oval as it formed the major part of the association’s revenue. Several players offered to use their cars to transport players from the High School grounds to the Oval. Players on the turf wickets were also asked to run on the sides of the wickets instead of in the middle as the latter practice did much harm to the turf.
