PIG RATES ANNOUNCED LATE SEASON FOR BEEF No change has taken place in the rates announced a fortnight ago for the purchase of fat stock for export from Gisborne.

\ H'ates for pigs have been announced as follows: Prime exportable pigs. 101 to 1801 b, 53d: second quality, same weight range, aid. These rates are subject to insurance deductions of Is per head, a rate that was reduced from Is 3d at the commencement of the season, while the Government levy of 2d per pig is also to come off the prices quoted. The prices- for unex'portable pigs have not been arranged yet. The Auckland schedule is based on Gi'cl for a weight range of 101 to 1801 b.

The top rales for iqmo remain at 73d per lb. for prime Southdowns and 73d for prime crossbreds, with wethers at ad and ewes at 3d. Lambs are still coming to hand steadily with satisfactory weights and good quality predominating. The beef season is expected to be late in starting, as a result cf the station cattle coming through the winter in low condition. Telescoping; of Carcases With the object of economising space in the freezing works, in the overseas liners and in British cold stores, arrangements have been made for the “telescoping" of the carcases of lamb and mutton, as was done during the Great War. A cut is made in the carcase between the llaps and the rump and the fore and hind parts arc secured by a special lashing. It is stated that "telescoping’’ gives a saving of approximately 25 per cent. The system will operate as from Monday.
