FRAGMENTS OF SHELL
MORE NAZI RAIDERS VICTIM OF BARRAGE BRITISH CIVIL PLANE (Elec. Tol. Copyright—Unitnd Press Assn.) (Reed. Nov. 22, 3 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 21. During the fight between the Dormer raider and Royal Air Force fighters to-day, which resulted in the German plane being shot dowh, bursts of machine-gun fire were heard directly above a Kent coastal town. Fragments of shell and bullet cases * fell on a roadway.
People rushed into the streets to see what was happening.
The air raid warning was not sounded. The Government has decided that the sounding of independent local air-raid warnings is not safe. No public warning will be sounded except under instruction of the Fighter Commander. The public should immediately shelter on hearing firing or explosions, even if no signal is given, owing to risk of injury from anti-aircraft shells and machine-gun bullets. Watching a combat is mere foolhardiness. Bomber Flying Low A Heinkel bomber was sighted over Sutherland flying low. It disappeared northwards. Three planes, believed to be enemy machines, were sighted over the Orkneys. Air-raid warnings were sounded. The Air Ministry and Minister of Home Security have announced that air-raid warnings were sounded in the Humber district at 7.15 o’clock this evening. were reported to be flying at vari- *• ous altitudes. Fighter aircraft were . sent up to intercept them and antiaircraft batteries engaged them. The “raiders-passed” signal was given shortly before 8.30 o’clock. No bombs were dropped. The Air Ministry regrets to announce that yesterday afternoon a British civil aircraft inadvertently flew into one of the balloon barrages and was brought down. The twb occupants were killed.
