“STILL A HOPE”

AIR LINK WITH SOUTH GISBORNE’S CLAIMS CHAMBER’S EFFORTS The strong claims of Gisborne for an air service of some description in view of the approaching holiday season, were voiced yesterday afternoon by Mr. L. Miles at the meeting of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce. On the motion of Mr. Miles, seconded by Mr. F. Tolerton, it was decided to reply in that manner to a letter received from the Minister of Transport, the Hon. R. Semple. The chairman, Mr. H. H. DeCosta, ,said there seemed to be still a hope that a skeleton service might be available. “Whilst I very much regret the inconvenience occasioned to the travelling public by the withdrawal of the planes from the Gisborne-Palmerston North service, I am sure your chamber will realise that the requisitioning of (he planes for air training purposes was necessary for war purposes, wrote Mr. Semple. He added that he would give full consideration to the representations of the chamber and confer with the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, regarding the availability or otherwise of pilots for one of Union Airways' Lockheed-Electra machines; which, he understood, was available for the service. Those present at tile meeting were Messrs. 11. IT. DeCosta, chairman, F. Tolerton, C. W, Muir, W. E. McIlwaine, T. Corson, 11. Gilmer, R. W. J. Edwards, M. F. Robinson, H. R. Kendon, L. Miles, S. T. Gray, R. P. Baigent, J. C. Graham, L. T. Barnard, James Chrisp. and the acting-secre-tary, Mr. Pax Lockett. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. M. J. White and F. Wise.
