INDUSTRIAL PEACE
EFFORTS IN BRITAIN JOINT WAR EFFORTS (Elec. Tel. Copyright —United Press Assn.) (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 9 a.m. RUGBY, Nov. 19. A conference between the miners and mine-owners' representatives reached an agreement which will exclude for the duration of the war and six months afterwards the possibility of strikes or lock-outs in the Lancashire and Cheshire coalfields. All disputes will be submitted to a joint district wages board. This local agreement is typical of tile many indications of the excellent spirit in industry and of the smooth working of methods of co-operation and joint conciliation to which the two sides m industry have pledged themselves since the war began. There is considerable satisfaction in labour circles at the success attending the endeavour of employers and trade unions to make a contribution to the national effort in terms of industrial peace.
The collective agreements operating over wide fields of industry have effected wage adjustments—almost all advances representing, in many cases, an improvement in real as well as money earnings—without recourse to outside arbitration and without Government intervention.
In South Wales, for example, tiro wages of steel workers have been increased by 6.25 per cent and the wages of tinplate workers by 3 per cent.
