Southland Chilled Reef

Mr. A. C. Derbie, who has returned to Invercargill from a visit to England, stated that the first shipment of chilled ■beef from Southland arrived in splendid condition, 'both the stallholders at Smithfield and the butchers being very pleased with the quality. He added that the Smithfield market was closed as soon as the war broke out. Now, meat from New Zealand and other countries was being sold at depots in different parts of London. When a shipment of meat arrived it was taken to cold stores and. instead of being taken to Smithfield, was distributed to the depots. Arrangements for the staffing of the depots with Smithfield men were made Jong before the war broke out.
