WORKING FULL BLAST
BRITISH SHIPYARDS
NAZI BOAST DISPROVED
(British Official Wireless.) Reed. 9 a.m. RUGBY, Nov. 18.
Many units of the German mercantile fleet are sheltering in neutral ports and are becoming an embarrassment because of the drain on the scanty foreign currency supply. Germany, by selling these vessels, might for a few days become the world’s greatest “ship supplier.”
The Germans’ claim to have replaced Britain as the greatest shipbuilding nation cannot be substantiated. Her building resources are already severely handicapped by the shortage of labour, raw materials, and urgent Admiralty demands in an endeavour to make up the unexpectedly heavy U-boat losses. In face of the delayed delivery of indifferent material and the German method of war on neutral shipping, it is doubtful whether neutrals are inclined to place orders. On the other hand, over 150 merchant ships are now being built in the United Kingdom and new keels are laid as soon as a slip is vacant. Every British shipyard is working at full capacity and most of the work is not for the Admiralty.
