MASTER DEFEATED

MUDFORD’S SUCCESS

PLANS FOR BF.AULIVRI

] RIP TO AUSTRALIA

By “Trenton” When Yours Truly beat Capricious in the New Zealand Cup it was a case of the pupil giving his master a lesson so far as the jockeys were concerned. According to H. N. Wiggins, who rode Capricious, W. .T. Mudford, who was. on the winner, showed promise from the start of his career. Wiggins gave him {he benefit of his experience while working on the tracks, and he says the lad was always willing to listen and take heed of what was told him. To this, no doubt, he owes a lot of his present success. Mudford is only 18 years of age and has gradually forced his way into the limelight by his ability. .His employer says that he has always been a good lad and is not likely to be spoiled by success. About four years ago Mudford suffered a bad fall while riding work and broke a leg. Bcaulivrc for Australia Present plans for Bcaulivrc after the Auckland summer meeting are to send him to Melbourne to run in the Caulfield Futurity Stakes, seven furlongs, run on February 24, at weight-ior-age, with penalties and allowances. After this Beaulivre will go to Sydney for the autumn racing. Well Belated Nightbeam, who failed, to gain a place at Te Rapa on Saturday, is well related. He is a bay colt by Night Raid outi of the Paladin —Tormentor mare Lady Burleigh, who raced only four times as a juvenile and was placed on each occasion. Tormentor was out of imported Torquato, who also left the useful Gauntlet and Martial Dawn, dam of Callamart, and who several removes back links with the line that has produced Royal Chief. Prior to Saturday, Nightbeam had won both races he had contested. Marly Success The stock of the Phalaris horse Phaleron Bay are giving their sire a good early advertisement, as the Avondale winner Phaleron is the third of his first crop to succeed. The others have been Cetewayo and Cherry Bay, who won at Trentham last month. Phaleron is a brown colt out of the Chief Ruler—Dovelef mare Columba. a winner herself us a two-year-old and a full-sister to Eaglet, a brilliant performer, whose successes included the Wanganui and Great Northern Guineas and the New Zealand Oaks, and also to Mother Superior, who won the A.R.C. Welcome and Great Northern Foal Stakes. Dovelet, who was imported from Australia, was a good performer before going to the stud. Phaleron therefore has a stout distalf ancestry to combine with Phaleron Bay’s fine lines, and so it was not surprising that Dr. A. McGregor Grant bid 500gns. at the last January sales lo secure him, although his sire was untried. Australasian Records Although Dark Flight and Enrich equalled Australasian records at Riccarton, their performances could hardly be compared with those of the record-makers.

The records were originally established at Riccarton, the six furlongs by the three-year-old Silver Scorn under 9.11 in February, 1933, and the five furlongs by die four-year-old Machine Gun under 11.5 in November, 1904. Dark Flight’s performance under 7.10 was, therefore, not as good as Silver Scorn’s, viewed through weight carried. On each occasion there was a strong following north-westerly wind down the straight. However, the wind might have been stronger on the day Silver Scorn set up her time, as two races later Crash, in hack class, ran the distance in 1.9 4-5, which was equal to the record prior to that day, held jointly by Chimera, at Riccarton, and The Hawk, at Trentham. Enrich’s record hardly compares from the weight angle with that of Machine Gun. The Hotchkiss horse carried 321 b. over weight-for-age, whereas Enrich had only 151 b. above the scale. Two horses, Paganelli and Amigo, as two-year-olds, ran 58sec. at Trentham, each carrying more weight than Enrich, and, although their record has been expunged as a result of a resurvey of the course, they must each have done very near that time. Two Great Horses It is interesting to compare the careers of Defaulter and Beaulivre up to the close of their racing at the New Zealand Cup meeting as three-year-olds. When Defaulter followed up his Derby success by winning the Canterbury Cup last year —he did not run on the first day of the meeting—he had started 18 times for 13 wins, a second and a third, and in stakes had earned £4875. Beaulivre’s record now comprises 19 starts for 14 wins, four seconds and a third, and £5905 in stakes. As stakes arc larger this season—Defaulter’s Derby was, for instance, worth only £875, and Beaulivre’s Derby this year carried £IOSO for the winner—their records up to this stage of their career are very similar.

Beaulivre's, if anything, is the better, as lie has never been out of the money and he is as yet unbeaten as a Ihrec-year-old. As a two-ycar-oJd Beaulivre had 11 starts for six wins and five minor placings and won £2315. This season he has had eight wins in eight starts and has won £3590. As Beaulivre won bis last two races as a two-year-old. he has had 10 wins iu succession. His next appearance will probably be at Ellersiie at Christ - mas.
