MAIKAI COMES HOME
WILLIAMSTOWN CUP CATALOGUE SECOND (Klee. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) , (Reed. Nov. 20, 9 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Nov. 19. The unluckiest horse this spring, Maikai, who hitherto had four seconds in four starts, two of which were behind Rivettc in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, was loudly cheered for winning the VVilliamstown Cup, in which the Pantheon—Ornum gelding was always placed.
He did not leave the rails until about three furlongs from home and when he Hit the front the race was as good as over. Catalogue came from ninth at the half-mile and battled on gamely. This gelding is now regarded as a danger in the Eclipse Stakes at Caulfield next Saturday.
Four of the six runners fell in the Cup Steeples, which were won by the Chief Ruler —Moulin Rouge gelding. Frenchy, from Musical David. Third place was filled by Pambo, who crashed but was remounted and completed more than a round of the course after the first two horses haa left the weighing-in enclosure.
Whernside finished third in the Cup Hurdle, which was won by Glowing from Cosier Lad. Results:—
VVilliamstown Cup, of £2500; 11 miles. —Maikai, 8.6 (Mornement), 1; Catalogue, 9.2 (Badger), 2; Fort Belvedere, (5.11 (Griffiths), 3. Eighteen started, including Royal Order. Maikai won a popular victory by two lengths and a half, with a length and a half belvven Catalogue and Fort Belvedere. Time, 2.321.
