THE WEATHER

Last Night's Forecast General Situation: Pressure continues high in the north but is falling fairly rapidly in the south with the approach of a depression. Forecast: Winds light and variable in the Auckland Peninsula, otherwise moderate north-westerly prevailing and freshening, with gales probable in exposed positions from Cook Strait southwards, a southerly change probable later in the far south. Seas: In New Zealand waters, becoming rough south of New Plymouth and about Cook and Foveaux Strait, slight or moderate elsewhere. Eastern Tasman Sea: Winds from a westerly quarter light to moderate in the north with slight seas, strong in the south with rough seas. Weather: Fair to line in eastern districts north of Otago and in the far north, otherwise cloudy to overcast with rain probable in the far south and gradually extending up western districts, with scattered falls as Car north as Taranaki. Temperatures: Mild to warm. but becoming somewhat cooler. To-day's North Island Report Barometric pressures indicating settled conditions and high morning temperatures were features of the reports received from various North Island stations to-day. Gisborne's 9 a.m. temperature being 68 degrees. Napier's 05. Tauranga's C 4. and all stations but Cape Maria Van Diemen returning 00 degrees or better. Light winds, generally westerly, were reported everywhere, and blue skies, with passing clouds, prevailed at Tiritiri, Tauranga, East Cape. Gisborne and Napier, overcast skies being reported from other stations. Visibility was good to excellent all along the coast, and seas were slight to moderate except at Wellington, where rough seas were reported. Midday Forecast General Situation: A shallow depression lies over the southern portion of the Dominion, but pressure remains high in the north. Forecast: Light to fresh winds from a westerly quarter. Weather: Fair and warm. Seas: Slight.
