DISPOSAL OF FUNDS
WAIROA'S CENTENNIAL DECISION TO CARRY ON PUBLIC MEETING MELD (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this clay. ■A public meeting held in the Borough Council chambers on Thursday evening for the purpose of deciding whether the funds should be devoted to a memorial or to patriotic purposes, agreed that the funds already collected for a centennial memorial in Wairoa should be devoted to the, cause originally agreed upon. The Mayor. Mr. H. L. Barker, stated that some time ago a promise was made to call the people together to enable them to decide for themselves to what purpose the money should be devoted, but judging by the attendance there did not appear to be a great deal of interest. He moved that the funds be devoted to the cause originally decided upon, and this was seconded by Mr. W. Caldcr.
Mr. J. M. Taylor said that it might be a good idea to give the Red Cross Society a help along with the funds. He felt that the war had dampened enthusiasm for the centennial to a certain extent. The Red Cross was a worthy object, and when things became normal again they could start off with the centennial effort afresh. ■ The view that he would be very sorry to see the Centennial Committee disturbed was expressed by Mr. J. Corkill, but, he added, at the same time he had been instructed by the Harbour Board, which he represented at the meeting, that the first consideration .should be the winning of the war. However, he felt sure that if the need came the committee would do the right thing. He had sufficient confidence in the committee for that.
When put to the meeting the motion was carried unanimously.
