CAMP COMFORTS

PYJAMAS FOR TROOPS NATIONAL COUNCIL PLAN CO-OPERATION INVITED USE OF DISTRICT FUNDS Members of the Poverty Bay Women’s Central Representation Committee are prepared to recommend members of associated organisations to undertake the making of pyjamas, soc'rk and handkerchiefs for troops in camp in New Zealand, under a plan

! advanced by the National Patriotic i Council, but they arc not prepared to ! expend the funds of the committee i in purchases ol' materials. A decision to this effect was reached last evening at a meeting of the Central Representation Committee, when the scheme of the National Patriotic Council was outlined. The scheme called for -the provision of 22.000 suits of pyjamas, 22,000 pairs of hand-knit-ted socks, and 44,000 handkerchiefs through the combined efforts of the I women of New Zealand, the council I recommending that each district j undertake to provide a quota, linanI cing its own purchases of materials.

Some discussion took place on the proposal, and speakers raised questions as to whether the pyjamas, socles and handkerchiefs were to be considered necessary items of equipment for camp life, or merely additional comforts. It was pointed out. incidentally, that soldiers trained in New Zealand for the last war did not receive pyjamas either as items of issue or as' camp comforts, the wearing of pyjamas being limited to a small minority of those who went through the camps. The result of the discussion was that the committee agreed to undertake a share of the work, on behalf of the District Patriotic Council, but the expenditure of the committee's funds tor materials was opposed. It was considered that the sponsors of the scheme should furnish the materials. and that block-cutting of cloth for pyjamas, in particular, should be arranged for bv the national council.
