SUCCESS OF PATROLS
NAZI SHIPS STOPPED DASH TO GERMANY (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 9 a.m. RUGBY, Nov. 14. The interception of the German vessels Mecklenburg and Parana is regarded in British naval circles as a demonstration of the efficiency of the British naval patrol. The ships were attempting to use bad weather and the northern mists to reach Norwegian territorial’ waters on the way to Germany, and the Mecklenburg was disguised as the Dutch ship “Hoogkerck.”
It is thought that the action of these ships, which have been sheltering in South American ports, in leaving neutral waters and their attempt to evade the British patrol was due to their inability to pay harbour dues, which are very heavy, thereby throwing a revealing light on the German lack of foreign currency.
